How to Read a Doctor’s Prescription?

Reading a doctor’s prescription for most people is like trying to read hieroglyphics. But this shorthand from doctors to pharmacists is essential to saving doctors time.

How to Read Doctor Prescription

All prescriptions contain the same information. The script begins with a letterhead at the top identifying the name, address and contact number of the prescribing doctor. This is important in case your pharmacist needs to contact them to clarify what’s written. In the middle of the prescription is where the actual order for medications is located in an abbreviated shorthand. It starts with the name of the drug, the dose of the drug, a unit of measurement, the route to give it, how often to give it, and for how long. Using our example above, this order is for a pain-killer called Voltaren, at a dose of 75 milligrams, given by mouth, once a day, for one week – see how much easier it is to write in shorthand. (This example is a prescription for arthritis joint pain).

How to Read Doctor Prescription Abbreviations

A prescription is a legal document which entitles the bearer access to controlled substances. This is designed to protect us from medicines that could be hazardous to use without direction. Remember to always carry identification when filling a prescription and read label instructions carefully before consuming. If you have a question about your medication asks your pharmacist. They will be happy to help.

7 Tips To Stay Mentally Sharp

There are times when all of us make silly mistakes, forget important things or experience a temporary memory lapse. Most of these signs occur with advancing age. Sometimes, these incidents may also occur due to an idle mind. Hence, it is important to keep our mind sharp and alert.

Here are a few tips to practice to keep our minds mentally sharp:

SET GOALS AND PRIORITIZE Firstly, set goals for yourself and note down a list of priorities in a systematic order. Every day, make efforts towards realizing your goal. Prioritizing your goals will keep your mind focused and away from any kind of unnecessary distraction.

REPEAT WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER When you need to remember some important information, try to memorise it by repeating the information several times. The human brain is designed to form new patterns on repetition. You can also note down the information on a paper or in a diary, which you can read later, in case you forget.

EXERCISE YOUR MIND AS WELL AS THE BODY Daily exercise helps in keeping the body healthy, but exercising the mind is equally important. Playing games like chess, monopoly, scrabble, etc., increases our thinking capacity, which eventually makes the brain sharp. Make a daily schedule of such exercises and maintain the routine. Reading is also a great exercise for the mind. Pursuing a hobby or learning a new skill also helps.

ASSOCIATE WITH SMARTER PEOPLE Meeting smarter people and learning new things from them can boost our brain function. If you associate yourself with smarter people, chances are you will be inspired by them, become more alert, and also share brilliant ideas. You eventually start thinking the way they think.

FIND TIME FOR YOURSELF This is the most important point. Don’t go overboard with socialising and meeting new people. Sometimes, being alone can help bring positivity to your mind, eventually keeping bad thoughts away.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET Today’s generation only wants to eat junk food. They avoid eating veggies and nutritious food, which is important for both the body and the mind. Make sure to get a balanced and nutritious diet. This helps in staying physically as well as mentally fit. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle also means getting the right amount of sleep on a daily basis. A minimum of 8 hours of sleep is essential for everyone.

KEEP BAD HABITS AT BAY If you want to stay mentally sharp, it is important to avoid habits like smoking, drinking, watching TV all day, etc. Take up constructive hobbies and keep yourself busy. Make sure you are working on something productive. This will help you stay away from destructive habits.
